CBCT Scans for Root Canal Treatment
For complex root canal cases, a small 3D scan shows the root anatomy and surrounding bone in detail a 2D X-ray can't.

When does a CBCT scan help with a root canal?
Most root canals are planned with periapical X-rays. In some cases, a CBCT scan shows what a 2D image overlaps or hides. Endodontic guidelines reserve CBCT for those cases and recommend scanning the smallest area that answers the clinical question.
When it's usually ordered
- Complex anatomy: extra, curved or calcified canals.
- Lesions at the root tip that don't show well on a regular X-ray, or pain without a clear cause.
- Internal or external root resorption.
- A suspected root fracture — keeping in mind that not every fracture is visible.
- Planning a retreatment or apical surgery.
- Dental injuries, when indicated.
In teeth with previous root canals, posts or metal restorations, the metal can create artifacts on the scan; the specialist takes this into account when reading it.
A scan sized to the question
For root canal cases, scanning a small area — one or a few teeth — is usually enough. Write the tooth or area on the order and confirm the protocol with us on WhatsApp.
Results
Images, DICOM files and a viewer, depending on the study, so your endodontist can review the slices in their own software. You leave with the scan on a USB drive about 10 minutes after it's taken. See also root canal treatment at SAGA.
FAQ
CBCT for root canals FAQ
Does every root canal need a CBCT scan?
No. It's ordered for specific cases, when a regular X-ray doesn't give enough information.
Does a CBCT scan show fractures?
It can show signs of a fracture, but not every fracture is visible — especially very thin ones or those near metal. Your specialist combines the scan with the clinical exam.
Do I need a consultation at SAGA first?
No. Bring the order and message us on WhatsApp at least 15 minutes before you arrive.
How much does it cost?
$1,200 MXN, the same as any CBCT scan.
