What is laser dentistry?

A dental laser is a concentrated beam of light. Depending on its type and settings, it can cut or reshape tissue, help control bleeding and help disinfect the area in some procedures. Each type of laser works on different tissues, so we use two:

• Fotona Er:YAG laser: works on hard tissue — enamel, dentin and bone — as well as soft tissue.
• Diode laser: used mainly on soft tissue, such as the gums.

We've used dental lasers for 24 years — as one tool among others, always chosen after an evaluation.

Diode laser gum contouring

Gum contouring — also called gingivectomy or gingivoplasty — removes or reshapes a small amount of gum tissue to even out the gumline or show more of the tooth. With a diode laser, cutting and bleeding control happen at the same time, and in some cases fewer stitches are needed.

It may be an option when the gums cover part of the teeth, when the gumline is uneven, or as part of a restorative plan. Before any contouring, your dentist checks the health of your gums and bone. Not every case can be solved with contouring alone, and we'll walk you through your options.

Other laser procedures

• Hard-tissue procedures on teeth and bone with the Fotona Er:YAG laser, in selected cases.
• Frenectomies and other minor soft-tissue procedures, when indicated.
• Support during root canal treatment, case by case.

Benefits and limits

In soft-tissue procedures, a laser can offer good bleeding control and, in some cases, reduce the need for stitches. It doesn't replace diagnosis, or the conventional technique when that's the better option — which is why every case is evaluated individually. It's part of our minimally invasive approach.
