Lateral Cephalometric X-Ray in Boca del Río
A profile X-ray of the skull and face that orthodontists and other specialists use to study how the teeth, jaws and skull relate to one another.

What is a lateral ceph?
A lateral cephalometric X-ray — "lateral ceph" for short — is an extraoral X-ray of the head and face in profile. To keep measurements comparable over time, your head is held in a standard position by a support called a cephalostat. Your orthodontist then traces the image and measures angles and distances between points on the skull, jaws and teeth.
What is it used for?
- Diagnosing and planning orthodontic and jaw-growth treatment.
- Checking growth and how the upper and lower jaws relate.
- Planning jaw (orthognathic) surgery, together with other studies.
- Progress and end-of-treatment records.
It's often ordered together with a panoramic X-ray as part of an orthodontic workup.
Cephalometric tracing
If your orthodontist also needs a tracing or analysis, see cephalometric tracing and tell us which analysis was requested.
What to expect
No preparation needed. Take off earrings, piercings, glasses and hair clips. We position you in profile with the ear rods in place, and the X-ray takes a few seconds. If you are or might be pregnant, tell us first.
